Things to Know Before Riding a Scooter with Salt Island Scooter Rental LLC
Key Features of Scooters
Before you hit the road, here are some essential features of scooters to keep in mind:
-
Braking System: Scooter brakes are similar to bicycles but reversed. The front brake is on the right handle, and the rear brake is on the left. Always use both brakes simultaneously for safe and controlled stops.
-
Scooter Controls: Most controls are on the left side of the handlebar. The horn is located at the bottom, turn signals are in the middle, and the headlight controls (high beam/low beam) are at the top.
-
Dashboard Display: Scooters typically feature a simple display that includes a speedometer and fuel gauge, making it easy to monitor your ride.
The Four Steps to Scooter Riding
1) Starting Your Scooter
-
Insert the key into the ignition slot and turn it to the "on" position.
-
Ensure the kill switch is set to the "run" position on the right handlebar.
-
Hold one of the brake levers and press the start button simultaneously to ignite the engine.
2) Accelerating and Decelerating
-
Scooters are automatic, so simply pull the throttle (right handlebar) toward you to accelerate. Push it back to decelerate.
-
Keep in mind: A 150cc scooter can reach speeds of over 55 mph, while a 50cc scooter typically tops out around 40 mph.
3) Turning the Scooter
-
To turn, push the handlebar in the desired direction and lean slightly. For example, push left and lean left to turn left. It’s intuitive and similar to riding a bike—just without the sweat.
4) Practice Makes Perfect
-
Start in an open and safe area, such as an empty parking lot or quiet street.
-
Practice controlling your scooter by accelerating, decelerating, and turning at low speeds until you feel confident.
